Shrewsbury will be the must visit place to go on Friday 4th July as independent retailers celebrate national Independents’ Day.

Boutiques, small shops, delis and merchants will celebrate the day, raising a toast to their independence and Shrewsbury’s unique retail offer.
Bucking the national trend, Shrewsbury’s independent retailers outnumber big chains on the high street by almost half. There are 400 independents out of a total of 680 retailers in the town.

To mark the occasion, independents including Tanners Wines on the Wyle Cop, Wysteria Lane on Dogpole and the new artisan deli Deliciate on the High Street, will offer customers one-off deals in celebration.

There will be wine available by the glass, as well as special offers on 30 different wines at Tanners, 20% on all gifts, all weekend, at Wysteria Lane and the chance to enter into a prize draw at Deliciate to win a selection of artisan produce from Shropshire.

Nicky Peters, co-owner of Deliciate, said “It’s really exciting to be a part of this celebration, especially in our first year of trading. We should all be very proud of the town’s strong independent offer, which really adds to the character of Shrewsbury. We are looking forward to what should be a great day of trading.”

Independents’ Day is an opportunity to support and celebrate Shrewsbury’s one-off independents, highlight their importance to the town’s economy and increase footfall.

Kirsten Henly, Shrewsbury BID Manager, said: “Shrewsbury has an assortment of independents that provide an original offer to residents and visitors alike. It will be a day to help promote and support our independents, which mean such a lot to the local community.”

In 2013, thousands of independent retailers got involved in the nationwide event which has been running for four years across the UK in over 150 different locations.
