Working with Springboard, we have installed two footfall cameras in Shrewsbury to count pedestrian numbers.

The first camera is positioned on Pride Hill, counting peoples across the whole width of the street from the edge of the Pride Hill Shopping Centre doorway to the edge of Holland and Barrett.

The second camera counts pedestrians on the South-East side footpath of High Street at the West Brom, it does not count pedestrians on the other side of the road.

The cameras use two lines to count pedestrians coming ‘in’ and ‘out’ and combine these two figures to reach a footfall total. The system for counting is able to recognise humans by their shoulder width, therefore vehicles are not counted.

The camera on Pride Hill captures a larger volume of pedestrians due to the larger area that it covers and because it spans the entire width of the road. The High Street camera only captures those walking on one side of the road, which is much narrower.

These two streets only offer a small picture of what is happening in the town centre of Shrewsbury. We are aiming to install more footfall cameras to collect other data which gives a more detailed picture on the health of the town centre economy.

Our footfall reports use the British Retail Consortium (BRC) Calendar, which consists of complete weeks (Monday – Sunday) to ensure that the same day is comparable each week. Each month is compiled from a set of full weeks which results in a calendar of a 4 week month, 4 week month, 5 week month pattern. The data is mostly presented to show a weekly average for the month to account for a misbalance in month size.

Footfall is only one measurement of how well a town is doing. Consistently, footfall is falling across the UK, the most commonly cited reason is that people are increasingly shopping online.  It is therefore important that town centres such as Shrewsbury evolves and innovate – and offers experiential services to shoppers that cannot be obtained from their homes.

Shrewsbury BID members receive a full monthly footfall reports, if you are not a member but would like access to this data, please see our Voluntary Membership.
