Plans are in place for Shrewsbury to celebrate the arrival of Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay on Monday 18 July 2022.

Shropshire Council has teamed with Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, Shrewsbury BID, Shrewsbury Town Council and Shropshire Festivals to create a community celebration in The Quarry from 4pm to 9pm on Monday 18 July.

Schools, sports clubs, arts organisations and local groups from across the county will be taking part in the festivities. Crowds can expect to be entertained with dance, arts, music, and sports and there will be food and drink stands showcasing local suppliers.

Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for communities, culture, leisure and tourism, and transport, said: “It is a great honour to welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay to Shropshire twice on its journey around the West Midlands and I am sure thousands of people will turn out to support it in both Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth.

“The celebrations organised by Shropshire Council and our partners will certainly add to the excitement and create standout memories for everyone involved. I would urge people to be a part of this spectacle and line the routes of the Queen’s Baton Relay and experience our celebrations.”

Seb Slater, Executive Director of Shrewsbury BID, added: “We are delighted that Shrewsbury has been chosen for the opening day of the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay in the West Midlands.
“We are working closely with partners to make the most of this opportunity to celebrate and showcase the town. We will shortly be providing more information about how businesses can get involved and support this exciting event.”

Roads will be closed for short periods during a two-hour period in the afternoon while the baton passed through. More information will be provided on this.
