Evolution Explored

Thought provoking and emotional images on the theme of evolution made a big impact when a ground-breaking ten-week photography exhibition opened in Shrewsbury in February 2017.

‘Evolution Explored, A Magnum Photos Exhibition’, is a joint project for Shrewsbury BID and its partners and a significant ‘first’ for a UK town.

The free street exhibition is a collaboration between Shrewsbury BID, The Hive Arts Centre and GRAIN Photography Hub and is supported by Arts Council England and sponsors.

Appearing in The Square and St Mary’s Square, the exhibition showcases the work of international photographers from the renowned Magnum Photos Agency. The theme ‘evolution’ stems from the town’s links to Charles Darwin and is explored in the widest and broadest sense. The 40 powerful images explore both small moments and world-changing events and are designed to challenge people’s views of the wider world.

We believe that everyone, not just people living in big cities like London or Manchester, has the right to access good quality arts and events. We hope it will be the first one in a series of flagship projects focusing on defining what makes Shrewsbury a great place. The legacy of Charles Darwin is something that should be celebrated.

Arts Council England, Shrewsbury Shopping, Shrewsbury Colleges Group and Redrow Homes, plus associate partner Shrewsbury Film are supporting the ten-week event, which runs until 23rd April. Fringe events supporting the exhibition include a talk by Magnum Photographer David Hurn and Photo Safari.
