Christmas in Shrewsbury

During the festive period, Shrewsbury BID delivers a comprehensive marketing campaign to encourage visitors and shoppers to experience Christmas in Shrewsbury.

Christmas parking and Park and Ride offers

Shrewsbury BID has lobbied the Council to introduce competitive parking and park and ride offers. In 2018, Shrewsbury BID negotiated free park and ride from 12pm with an increased frequency to 20 minutes, free parking after 3pm at Abbey Foregate and Frankwell, along with 50% off parking at Raven Meadows for late-night shopping Wednesdays. Shrewsbury BID also funded additional services until 9pm for these evenings.

Christmas stunts

Each year, Shrewsbury BID arranges Christmas stunts to encourage shoppers to choose Shrewsbury. These have included stilt walkers, renaming the town ‘Snowsbury’, a giant snowglobe and a Nutcracker Trail.

In 2018, we created a giant Christmas card selfie frame, which was positioned around the town during late night shopping Wednesdays with the images shared on social media. We also printed 10,000 rolls of Shrewsbury themed wrapping paper, which were given to businesses for Small Business Saturday to wrap gifts or give to their customers for free.

In 2019, we will be bringing a tree to Shrewsbury Square. Check back for more information!

Christmas lights switch on

Shrewsbury BID sponsors the Christmas lights switch on, giving us a key place at the table during the planning of the event with Shrewsbury Town Council. Shrewsbury BID also creates the marketing materials for the Christmas lights switch on, which includes the stage banners, programme and posters, and sponsorship of the lantern parade.

Christmas magazine

Shrewsbury BID produces Christmas magazines to showcase the best places to go and things to see during the festive period. In 2017, Shrewsbury BID created the Christmas Gift Guide. We invited all retail businesses in the BID community to submit an item for inclusion, which was styled and photographed. 60,000 Gift Guides were printed and distributed within Shrewsbury and up to an hour and a half away.

In 2018, we created a showcase of The Wonderful World of Shrewsbury at Christmas, which highlighted the great things to see and do in the town during November and December. 20,000 booklets were printed and distributed within Shrewsbury and up to an hour and a half away.

Christmas video

The Shrewsbury Christmas video is greatly anticipated within the town. Since 2014, the videos have captured the spirit and atmosphere of Shrewsbury, from a love story to the Christmas lights switch on, to a family gathering.

The 2017 video followed the Plastead family, local historian Richard Tisdale and his son Hector and proud Salopians Peter and Helen as they showed us what they like best about Shrewsbury at Christmas.

On-going marketing and PR

Within the Christmas campaign, Shrewsbury BID continues to deliver a high level of PR value through media coverage and press trips.
