Promoting & Animating

Each year we install eye-catching flags along the length of High Street for the summer months. Adding colour and interest to the centre of the town and celebrating local artists.

Shrewsbury BID’s town flag programme launched in 2019 with Darwin Discoveries, a winning design by a local artist featuring geometric interpretations of Darwin’s animals.

In 2020, as the pandemic took hold, the SYTogether display celebrated community spirit through swan imagery, including the elusive black swan.

2021 saw over 800 submissions from local children, with selected animal drawings filling all 70 flag spots, while 2022’s display – commissioned to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – was created by local artist Emma Williams as a celebration of summer in Shrewsbury.

Since then, the programme has deepened its ties with the Shrewsbury Arts Trail: 2023’s flags responded to a landmark display of Salvador Dalí sculptures in the town; 2024 designs were developed through public workshops at the Drawn Fair around the Arts Trail theme of ‘time’; and in 2025, local artist and educator Clare Scarlett led two collage workshops with children to create flag designs celebrating the flowers of Shropshire, reflecting the Arts Trail’s ‘environment’ theme.

Lamppost Banners

Working with Shropshire Council, we have established a network of lamppost banner spaces to fill the town with colour and advertise community activities and events.

There are 15 lamppost spots around Shrewsbury town centre, which community groups or event organisers are welcome to use. All bookings must come through Shrewsbury BID and businesses will be charged the cost of printing, installing and a small admin fee.
