To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2022, we commissioned local artist Emma Williams to create a patriotic display celebrating summer in Shrewsbury.
In 2021, we asked local children to draw a picture of an animal. We had over 800 submissions from which we chose designs to fill the 70 flag spots. A window installation explained the project to visitors.
As the pandemic was starting, we worked with a local artist to create a display celebrating Shrewsbury’s community spirit. The SYTogether designs featured swans, including the elusive black swan. We were able to increase the size of the flags for this year and use a solid material.
We first installed the flags in 2019, a tender was sent to local artists asking them to create a proposal based around Darwin. Darwin Discoveries was the winning design, featuring geometric images of Darwin’s animals.
Working with Shropshire Council, we have established a network of lamppost banner spaces to fill the town with colour and advertise community activities and events.
There are 15 lamppost spots around Shrewsbury town centre, which community groups or event organisers are welcome to use. All bookings must come through Shrewsbury BID and businesses will be charged the cost of printing, installing and a small admin fee.
